Alton Wolfe, Jr. got 51% of the vote in a three-way race for the Paw Paw mayor’s office in the town election on Tuesday, June 2.
The election also saw three candidates tied for two council seats, but that was resolved on Monday, June 8, when one of them withdrew from consideration.
Wolfe, a Paw Paw businessman, garnered 54 votes in winning a majority of the votes against Steve Moreland, who got 35 votes, and William Hayes, Jr., who got 17.
Winning the five council seats were Susie Fletcher, with 66 votes; Jennifer Wolfe, with 62; Rosalee Newlon, with 54; and Tabby Kerns and Doreen Willis, each with 48.
In unofficial vote totals, Karen Hayes also received 48 votes, but she announced on Monday that she was withdrawing.
Hayes sent a written statement to Paw Paw Town Hall, saying: “I believe that I have the good of the community in mind as I respectfully withdraw my name from competition for a seat for the next town council. This will eliminate the ‘tie problem’ and enable the town to move forward with a newly elected slate of officers on July 1.”
The losing candidates for town council were Anna Lou Moreland, with 46 votes; Janice McConnell, with 40; and Karen Braithwaite, with 32.
Regina Brack will become Town Recorder when the new officials take over with the start of the fiscal year on July 1.
Brack received 76 votes in her unopposed run for the recorder’s post.
